An Educational Therapist is not a specific qualification - just a description of an educational professional who looks at all aspects of a child's development to support their learning, and is trained in using therapeutic approaches to complement educational ones. Child development does not happen in neatly separated boxes: for early years and primary aged children it is important to me to look at all aspects of their development and how they are interrelated. One area of need can impact on several other areas of a child's confidence and success.
I look at children's learning skills, play skills, attention skills, their emotional, behavioural and social skills, their memory skills, their movement, vestibular and co ordination skills for both fine and gross motor, and their language and communication skills, and plan for ways to support all parts of their development. Where adults have needs they would like support with, I work in a similarly holistic way.
I am a qualified teacher with a B.Ed (hons) in Lower Primary Education, a M.Ed in Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, over 20 years practical teaching experience of children with SEND, developmental and learning challenges, and over 10 years experience in working with and training educational professionals. I am also a Rhythmic Movement International Practitioner, and have trained with the Nurture Group Network, The Theraplay Institute, the Emmett Technique, and SAQ, and I use elements and strategies from these within my work.
